about

“We must assume our existence as broadly as we can; everything, even the unheard-of, must be possible in it. That is at bottom the only courage that is demanded of us: to have courage for the most strange, the most singular and the most inexplicable that we may encounter.” ---Rilke, Letters to A Young Poet

What do you do when confronted by the bizarre? The unexplainable? What do you allow yourself to notice—and what becomes important? I love this story by Philip K. Dick. It’s a contemporary fairy tale about something that just might happen to you—if you let it.

I found this story in Spells of Enchantment: The Wondrous Fairy Tales of Western Culture edited by Jack Zipes. I modified the story somewhat in order to tell it to you.
