about

Orpheus and Eurydice is a story from Greek mythology about a man who went to hell and back. He was one of the most famous poets who ever lived and we’re told that Orpheus’ song could charm the birds and the trees. He was also the primary figure in the ancient Orphic mystery cult.
The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice originated with the Greeks but it was especially popular with the Romans and was told by Virgil and Ovid. It’s often read as a sad love story—and it is—but there is much more to consider.

This program is a recording of my telling of the tale at the local mythological roundtable and includes a little music from Anais Mitchell’s folk opera Hadestown.

Why did Orpheus go to the land of the dead? Could anything motivate you to make such an arduous journey?
